# Lead paint rules by state

## New Jersey lead paint rules in brief

* Municipalities must inspect, or have a certified lead evaluation contractor inspect, certain single-family, two-family and multiple rental dwellings for lead-based paint hazards every three years or at tenant turnover, unless there is a valid lead-safe certification. Owners and landlords may hire a certified lead evaluation contractor directly (NJ DCA).
* DCA certifies lead evaluation and abatement contractors. NJDOH licenses the individual inspector/risk assessors, who must work for a DCA-certified contractor (NJDOH).
* DCA asks you to confirm a contractor's certification at (609) 633-6224 before hiring.

## New York lead paint rules in brief

* New York State does not run its own lead-based paint activities certification. EPA certifies firms and individuals there, and EPA's locator is the official lookup.
* In New York City, Local Law 1 of 2004 places lead-paint duties on landlords of older multiple dwellings where young children live. NYC HPD explains the current inspection and XRF-testing requirements.
* Lead-based paint inspections and risk assessments in pre-1978 housing must be done by EPA-certified inspectors or risk assessors working for an EPA-certified firm.

## Massachusetts lead paint rules in brief

* Under the Massachusetts Lead Law, homes built before 1978 where a child under 6 lives must have lead hazards corrected. A licensed lead inspector or risk assessor does the inspection.
* Inspectors and risk assessors are licensed individually; the state list gives their city, phone and email.
* Deleading itself must be done by a licensed deleading contractor (or, for some tasks, the owner after training). That list isn't included here yet.
